Stow on the Wold Market Cross

The Stow on the Wold Market Cross is not a War Memorial. It is a symbolic reminder to market traders during medieval times to deal honestly after the Charter which began in 1107. The shaft base and steps are 15thcentury but the gabled headstone added in 1878 was toppled in 1994 and replaced. The 4 sides depict a Crucifixion, St Edward, The Wool Trade and the Battle of Stow. A plaque to commemorate the Battle of Stow in 1646 was erected in 2012.
